Great log of your trip. We are off myself in two weeks to Chicago and are driving to LA on Route 66 over 3 weeks with a detour to Oura, Phoinex and Las Vegas.
Thanks for the great tips and ideas in your log.

I'm starting to plan a roadtrip with my husband this summer/fall. Of course it's tempting to choose Route 66, but I've looked at other options as well. Just want to thank you for your inspiring website. Maybe it will be Route 66 after all...

Thanks for an enjoyable read I felt like I was there. My wife has always wanted to see the Grand Canyon and I already have the 57 Chevy, so there you go. We will probably do the old "Rent-a-Wreck" deal. Thanks again I enjoyed it.

My daughter, Rebecca, just moved from Grand Rapids, Michigan to San Francisco. Not wanting her to undertake such a journey alone, I offered to drive her, along with her car and belongings, from our meeting point in Chicago to San Francisco. Although I was planning to generally follow a more direct US 30-I 80 routing west, Becky asked if we could travel via Route 66, instead, knowing that I had always wanted to make such a trip. Since I had taken a week off work (with the weekends bracketing each end), I figured we would have enough time to undertake the longer Route 66 path, even if we ultimately had to "cut and run" someplace out west.
On Saturday morning, Sept 29th, we started from Jackson Blvd and Michigan Ave, at the "Begin Illinois US 66" sign, and followed the road all the way to Santa Monica over the subsequent eight days, arriving there at 8 pm on Saturday, October 6th. Although we certainly could have easily spent much more time traversing such a great distance with all there was to see, we nonetheless packed quite a bit into our eight days on "The Mother Road." It was a journey never to be forgotten, and a very special time spent with my daughter, who was enthralled with the unique aura and history that encompass Route 66.
I enjoyed reading your account of your trip from Rolla to Needles, and it seems so much more vivid now that I have witnessed most of the same sights you described for myself.

I travelled with 8 friends on Route 66 this year (2007) on a Harley, of course
I saw the gunfight at Oatman & sent postcards home. If you patted a burro a cloud of dust came off them
We stopped & bought T shirts for the kids at the Rusty Bolt, Seligman
I'm 70 and first time in USA. Wonderful trip but it does rain in California

Remember fond memories as a kid driving "across country" with the family. Still trying to find the "Longhorn Ranch" with Indian Teepees and old stagecoach rides. Any clues as to which state to look in? Great documentary of your travels.

My husband and I have been planning our trip for over three years. We have come to the conclusion that we will simply relocate to Arizona from Florida. We have all of our plans made and we will be leaving the third or fourth week in July. We plan to travel by car west until New Mexico. There we will head north and take a left onto Route 66 at Albuquerque like Bugs Bunny should have done. We plan on driving to Winslow Arizona and standing on a corner to look for a girl in a flat bed Ford. We are going to casually find our way to the Queen Creek area where we will eventually settle for awhile. I hope our experience is just as nice as yours. We found a hotel called Wigwam Hotel in Holbrook Arizona on Route 66 that looks very interesting. Each room is actually it's own teepee, we're planning on staying there for one night. Hopefully we are able to find other interesting and unique hotels or motels along the way. Thank you for sharing your trip with us, it's been a pleasure.

Was born and raised near route 66 near the Springfield MO area. Have always been interested in the roads history. Thanks for your website, enjoy it and will visit often.
